Sonny Baredo was a mutant whose powers surfaced when he was 14, tragically draining the life energies of his entire family. His powers drew the attentions of Professor Charles Xavier, who attempted to recruit him into his school for Gifted Youngsters to help him to control his powers. However, before Xavier could negotiate Sonny's release from his foster home, he was kidnapped by the Vanisher and Ogre, agents of the X-Men's enemies Factor Three. The Ogre designed a helmet which suppressed Sonny's powers, and he was imprisoned within their headquarters at Mt. Charteris, Colorado, shielded from Xavier's mind.
