Ape was a mutant possessed of an extremely malleable molecular structure that allows him to restructure his body to change his physical appearance, stretch his body like an elastic band, or to change his shape into that of any solid object that he can imagine. Being of limited intelligence, the shapes that Ape chooses to change into are often very simplistic in design, such as a jar. However, Ape has been known to take on more complex forms, such as that of a vacuum cleaner.

Virtually nothing is known of the past of the man known only as Ape before he joined the underground community of mutants known as the Morlocks who lived in "The Alley", a huge tunnel located beneath Manhattan. Ape was amongst the few Morlocks that managed to escape the massacre of their community by the superhuman team of assassins known as the Marauders. Ape was later captured by the subversive organization known as Weapon X and imprisoned in the mutant concentration camp named "Neverland". He was summarily executed after he was deemed of no value to the Project.
