FF sequel rakes in $57 million in opening weekend at the box office

Although it might be a bit cliché say that it did fantastic, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" did indeed scorch the the box office this weekend. Raking in $57.4 million it its opening salvo according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, Marvel's First Family beat out expectations by anywhere from $4 million to $20 million, depending on the source.

Battling mixed reviews and wary expectations, "Rise of the Silver Surfer" layed the smackdown upon "Ocean's Thirteen" and continued the uber-successful streak for Marvel's film division. Naysayers be darned, USA Today's Scott Bowles proclaimed that the film "improves mightily on the original."

The first "Fantastic Four" installment also proved a financial colossus in its first week at the box office in 2005, grossing $56.1 million on the weekend of its release. It too was expected to accrue far less than it did. Eventually, "Fantastic Four" moved on to gross $154.7 million domestically and $330.1 million worldwide. If this proves any predictor, "Rise of the Silver Soar" could eventually soar to similar stellar heights.

While the question of a third "Fantastic Four" film burns brightly, talk of a Silver Surfer spin-off film has increased of late. Whatever the case, keep checking Marvel.com for all your Marvel news and info.
