Each week we highlight a classic storyline told in full inside Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, the greatest collection of Marvel comics available online! This week we revisit AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE!

AVENGERS: THE
INITIATIVE

When Iron Man announced the 50-State Initiative during Civil War, did you wonder where he was planning to find enough heroes to do the job?

AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE solves that dilemma. Writer Dan Slott and penciller Stefano Caselli developed, discovered, and dredged up more than enough superhumans who would be able to fill the 50 Initiative teams, once they've been licensed. The young recruits at Camp Hammond, the Initiative training center in Stamford, Conneticut, train on the exact ground cleared by the disaster that sparked the Civil War. If they want to earn their Superhuman licenses, they have to prove that they won't cause another Stamford.

The Initiative recruits can't teach themselves and Camp Hammond has an all-star staff, all ready to turn nervous teenagers into full-fledged Avengers. However, the staff doesn't necessarily see eye-to-eye on everything. Former New Warrior Justice clashes with drill sergeant the Gauntlet when he uses the Warriors name as an insult, and Secretary of the Superhuman Armed Forces Henry Peter Gyrich rarely gets along with anyone.

But the teaching staff and students will have to come together, as in the first three issues of this ongoing series they face a horrible tragedy, a terrorist invasion, and an unregistered superhuman namd Spider-Man, just to name a few of the challenges headed their way.

Becoming a super hero has never been easy, but in AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE it gets a lot tougher.
