Digital Comics Creator Spotlight: Matt Fraction
The writer of INVINCIBLE IRON MAN swings back in time with Spider-Man for a critically acclaimed love story

Every week, we'll tap one creator to browse Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited and pick some of their favorite work from the expansive catalog. This week: Matt Fraction, writer of INVINCIBLE IRON MAN "[SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1] was the first—and, to date, only—full-length Spider-Man script I've written. He's always been a favorite. I try to work him into almost everything I do, anywhere I can. Before this, I had him show up in PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #4 to get barfed on, to pay homage to [J.M.] DeMatteis and [Mike] Zeck, and to get a good guy out of a bad bar then get lost. Not a big appearance. Fun to write though. Really fun. He's great. He's the perfect comic character.
"So with this, I wanted to write a love story, and I wanted to touch on all these amazing women, events, and periods of Spidey's life—especially as I might never get the shot again To see Gwen Stacy in the Coffee Bean, Mary Jane in that dress, the near miss, the first kiss—I wanted to play with all the toys in the toy box. I loved writing this book. [artist Salvador Larocca] did an amazing job of honoring Messrs. [John] Romita and [Ross] Andru and still pushed forward, taking my ridiculous notes and annotations and references and obeying them with exacting detail. I apologized to Jeph Loeb in person for ripping off he and [Tim] Sale's little caption-box gimmick.
"A reference explained: Peter's joke with his mix tape about the 'Nova' special about rhinos. The first 'date' Peter and MJ ever went on, they saw the Rhino on a rampage. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN v1 #43.
"If I was Spider-Man, I'd eat lunch on top of the Chrysler Building every single day. Joe Quesada drew Peter and MJ standing together from issue's end in the last montage of the marriage in the last part of "One More Day." I saw it a couple days before Christmas, when Joe showed me the art for the issue in printout form. Best present ever.
"This comic was nominated for an Eisner award this year. I couldn't be more flattered."

Yeah, this was defintely one of the better parts of Back in Black, showing how wonderful a character MJ is, and how strong and well-written the Spidey Marriage can be if the right writer is on it....
