I guess any EIC makes controversy
Some decisions will always be unpopular (cough cough) and the you-know-what has to roll somewhere.

I've admired Mr. Q's editorship for a while for the simple fact that he seems to let creative people do creative jobs without getting in the way too much, and let people work with people they work well with.

It's hard to know what happens behind the scenes but overall I think he's been a good influence on Marvel. At least the past few years haven't been boring, that's for sure. Marvel is pretty creatively diverse right now, and that's fantastic.

This may be a bit offtopic but...
Quesada mentioned on a previous blog that he wanted to see Comics propelled to a point it becomes accepted by the public. My question: is Quesada aware of a campaign thread in the suggestions boards arguing FOR the inclusion of a comic book course in school? As I have no way of actually PMing you the link to the previously mentioned thread, I have posted the link to said thread below.

So Joe Q is a big enough man to admit when he is wrong. Sounds good to me.

Heck, other than OMD I liked some of the changes he made. Cap's death was stirring and emotional (though I firmly believe we need, now more than ever, a positive American role model that only the Cap can provide). Parker's unmasking is one of the gutsiest moves in comics (and it was done in character). It's a shame that one unpopular decision can change all that, make the fans forget the good he has done.

Me, I'm still sore about OMD. That's not going to change.

But I'll try to not let that colour my opinions about Joe Q beyond that. Hopefully others will try the same.

I haven't agreed with all of his editorial decisions. But stories like these show that this man knows what he's doing, controversies or not.

i'm a rambler!
Personally I like Joe Q (as much as one can like someone you have never met) and have no problem accepting the fact that not every decision he makes as EIC is going to sit well with me. Generally speaking I don't believe Marvel has ever been in better shape.

I'm not a fan of BND (someone hire Jeff Parker to write it btw) but at least you have all been completely up front about the rational behind the necessity of it, and while I can't fault your logic, I would still dispute your conclusions. Anyways, I'm not overly worried; as, as that critically acclaimed guy with the pale face and dark clothes once said, while writing for your Distinguished Competition, "The great stories have a way of returning to their original forms." (Guess you could use that on either side of the argument.)

No, really what I want to say, apart from a big thank you to both your good self and Joe Q, is to be careful about having yearly "BIG EVENTS," and so many variant covers. It struck me recently that the last time I can remember this happening was the early 90s. The big difference this time is that the quality of writing is generally much stronger. That said, the occasional summer without a Civil War, a World War, or indeed a Crisis would be much easier on my poor pocket.

So, anyways, "Thank you," to you and Joe. If it ever seems that the whole internet is ganging up on you, while I can't guarantee I'll agree with any individual decision either of you will make, i can guarantee you both have a big fan here, who knows you both have Marvels best interests at heart.

I discovered mr Q with his work on X-Factor. I'm not ashamed to say there's some kind of fantasy in his art I tend to miss these days, something I only found in the work of Simon Bisley by example,something like lucidity about comic-book itself.The latest cover for Invincible IronMan 1 proves it still, with the multiple reflections upon the armor; mr Q has something like that for every character he's working at.A way to say to the readers to not being dupe about what they are reading.
When I learned about him becoming an editorial I was sure it will be a good thing for Marvel because he was a practician, wich would necessarily include a different point of view.
Still haven't read OMD yet, waiting for the trade, but I will repeat what I said : using Mephisto at his full potential as character is a brilliant move, like I'd like to see much in Marvel especially for SpiderMan.

I love Joe!
I wish he'd make the public olive branch to John Byrne, as I believe Byrne has much to offer the Joe Quesada system and Marvel. I don't blame him for the Byrne thing or anything, I just think the whole thing is dumb, so who cares about the whys and who is to blame, just make good comics.

Other than the "good old boys" club stuff going overboard at times, he's the man. He's got lots of people who like working for him, and he's finally starting to let classic comic writers like Roy Thomas, Roger Stern, David Michelinie, and Bob Layton do work for Marvel again. Hopefully they'll get more modern artists to work with in the future.

It's good that Joe is like, that, and that you, Tom, respect a person that can man up and admit to being wrong. Too many people are too stubborn to try things another person's way. That confidence that Joe showed in the editor, against his judgements, will go a long way with everybody involved.

I would love to see Byrne at Marvel again, but I think that ship has sailed years ago. He seems to be happy at IDW, anyway.

I've grown to respect Joe Q a little more recently. Its just felt that over the years, he has put his interests in bringing in new talent (read:Hollywood) over quality creators that alot of fans like. There is a place for both and it seems like Marvel is a little friendlier to those older talents these days.

Why would we want John Byrne back in the first place?

No one has tried to guess who the artsit and what the book was? I couldn't come up with any guesses for the life of me.

Best guess says David Aja on Iron Fist. Potentially, an insignificant enough book to take a chance on, and not the kind of artist you could imagine drawing old school Iron Fist. And, boy, did he, Fraction and Ed Brubaker really hit the ball out of the park. Can't believe a new team is coming on board. If any of the creators ever reads these blog comments, thanks for the surprise hit of the last two years.

Q has done some great artwork, although I think his writing is good to. Come to think about it he makes for a great editor at the same time, ????? wait a minute oh right I forgot he does all those things at Marvel and he does it so well....Grrrrrrr. (snit)

I would guess it was Khoi Pham onto Mighty Avengers. I didn't like his Herc work, but MA was alright.

And NO to John Byrne! His redoing of Spider-Man was horrible. And Brian MB's was infinitely better! Keep that guy away from Marvel from now on!
